China canceled bilateral meeting with Japan after G7 statement about Taiwan

The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that a meeting between China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Japanese counterpart on the sidelines of ASEAN events in Cambodia had been cancelled.

The Chinese side is strongly displeased with the joint statement put out by the G7 nations about Taiwan, said Hua Chunying, spokesperson at the ministry, at a regular media briefing.

The G7 foreign ministers and the EU high representative said in a joint statement on Wednesday that they are concerned by the “threatening actions by China” across the Taiwan Straits, which “risk unnecessary escalation.”

The Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU slammed the G7 statement, saying it’s “ugly” and “shameless,” and is reminiscent of the “Eight-Power Allied Forces” that invaded China a hundred years ago. Read more …
