China expelled Canadian diplomat in Shanghai in reciprocal move

China on Tuesday expelled a Canadian diplomat in Shanghai in response to Canada told a Toronto-based Chinese diplomat to leave the country.

China has decided to take reciprocal countermeasures, declaring persona non grata Consul Zhen Yihui of the Canadian Consulate General in Shanghai and asking her to leave China before 13 May.

That came after Canada on Monday expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei after an intelligence report accused him of trying to target a Canadian lawmaker critical of China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslim minority.
