China launches 6-month campaign to crack down on illegal activities related to use of assisted reproductive technologies

China will launch a six-month campaign to crack down on illegal activities related to the use of assisted reproductive technologies such as buying or selling of sperm or eggs and surrogacy, according to a statement released by 14 governments department including the National Health Commission.

Assisted reproductive technology can only be used in the country’s 543 approved medical institutions, it said.

Illegal use of human assisted reproductive technology seriously damages women’s health and rights and the issuance of false birth medical certificates have caused illegal detention and trafficking of women and other crimes that seriously violate the rights and interests of women and children, it said.

The authority vowed to introduce other measures including strictly managing patient identification, strengthening the approval and verification of human assisted reproductive technology and increased penalties for violations.
