China launches nationwide promotional campaign to boost car sales

China’s Ministry of Commerce on Thursday announced a nationwide campaign to promote automobile purchases during the period of July – December this year in a major push to shore up demand in the world’s largest auto market.

Local authorities will coordinate with the auto promotional campaign, recommend 3-5 candidate cities for the “100 Cities Campaign” and the ministry will select about 100 cities for key promotional campaigns, the ministry said in a notice on Thursday.

The ministry will step up preferential policies for car purchases, strengthen support in funding and venue for the activities and work with local authorities and companies to introduce targeted measures to boost car consumption, give full play to local financial resources, and encourage financial institutions to introduce financial support for car consumption, according to the notice.

It vowed to improve charging infrastructure in rural areas and promote construction of centralized public charging pile sites, it said.
