China sees strong start to Singles’ Day shopping event as domestic consumption rebounds from coronavirus

Chinese e-commerce giants Alibaba Group and JD.com posted strong sales on the first day of the Singles’ Day shopping event, amid a recovery in consumer spending in China after the coronavirus pandemic hit retail sales hard earlier in the year.

Alibaba, which created the annual Singles’ Day online shopping festival in 2009, said that hundreds of millions of consumers flocked to its Taobao and Tmall online shopping platforms when the clock struck midnight on Sunday,and checked out 14 million discounted items, the company said in a statement on Monday.
