The Chinese government has established an inter-ministerial meeting mechanism focused on the country’s digital economy, in a move to align different regulators in supervising the tech sector.

Under the mechanism, top officials from 20 government bodies including the National Development and Reform Commission, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Administration for Market Regulation, and the Public Security Bureau, etc, will meet at least one a year, according to a statement released by the State Council, China’s cabinet.

Some of the major tasks include implementing Beijing’s strategy on digital economy development, researching and coordinating “important issues” in the sector, and formulating policies in key areas such as digital transformation and big data, it said.

As various government departments rushed to impose authority over the tech sector over the past year, inconsistencies and conflicting priorities have emerged. A meeting mechanism is one of the arrangements within the government, designed for different parties to communicate.
