China will implement an upgraded version of emission standards for vehicles across the country from July 1, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said on Tuesday.

China will ban production, imports and sales of vehicles that do not comply with the National VI B emission standards, which include stricter requirements on pollutants including carbon monoxide of gas and petrol vehicles, according to the statement from the ministry.

It will also require Real-Driving Emission (RDE) tests of the vehicles while driven on the road, which are not required in the current standards of National VI A implemented since July 2020.

The ministry has granted a six-month grace period to sales of light vehicles that are yet to meet the requirements of RDE tests in the National VI B standards.

As of the end of January 2023, China’s inventories of vehicles that don’t meet the requirements of the RDE test stood at 1.89 million units, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

The high inventory was because auto market performance was weaker than expected; it takes time to switch production; new energy vehicles are scrambling market share; and price cuts in some regions have intensified consumers’ wait-and-see attitude, said the association.
