China looks to limit the time spent on smartphones for minors under the age of 18 to a maximum of two hours a day.

Those who are aged 16 to 18 should be allowed two hours on smartphones a day, children aged eight to 16 limited to one hour while children aged under eight limited to just eight minutes, the Cyberspace Administration of China said on Wednesday.

Providers of smart devices should introduce minor mode programmes that would bar users under 18 from accessing the internet on mobile devices from 10 pm to 6 am, it said.

However, the regulator noted that service providers should allow parents to opt out of the time limits for their youngsters.
