China’s auto exports have been rising since 2022 and surpassed Germany to become the world’s second largest auto exporter in 2022, surging 55.3% from the previous year, according to market research firm Canalys.

In the first quarter of 2023, China surpassed Japan to become the world’s largest auto exporter, mainly driven by exports of new energy vehicles, it said.

In 2023, China’s auto exports are expected to reach 4.4 million units, with NEV exports likely to account for more than 30%, it estimates. That’s 41% higher than the 3.11 million units in 2022, according to China’s official data.
