China’s corn imports surged nearly sevenfold from a year earlier to four-and-a-half year high in September as China step up overseas purchase to address a domestic shortage and soaring prices.

Corn imports surged to 1.08 million tonnes last month, 675 per cent above the same period last year, accelerating from the 339 per cent increase recorded in August, shows calculations based on data released by China’s General Administration of Customs.
