China’s cyberspace regulator vowed to strengthen management of self media, referring to accounts that publish news and information but are not government-run or state-approved.

China will regulate the sources of information regarding domestic and international current affairs, public policies and social events, as well as improving the management of multi-channel network institutions (MCNs) of self media, the Cyberspace Administration of China said on Monday.

Online platforms should hold self media accountable for the authenticity of the information they publish and self-media’s account name should be displayed on the page the information, without replacing them with anonymous users, it said.

Self-media shall not publish information that is untrue, taken out of context, with distorted facts, and should not affect the authenticity of the information by means of patchwork editing, synthesizing or forgery, it said.
