China’s industrial output grew by 4.4% in June from a year earlier, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.

The growth unexpectedly picked up from the 3.5% growth seen in the previous month and beat expectations for a 2.7% rise in a Reuters poll of analysts.

During the first half of the year, industrial output grew by 3.8% from a year earlier, showed the data.

China’s industrial production recovered steadily in the first six months, with the equipment manufacturing industry growing rapidly, green energy industry accelerating, new material and smart production increasing at a fast pace and new energy vehicle output continuing to grow at a fast pace, said the NBS.

In breakdown, the mining industry’s output grew by 1.5% in June from a year earlier, returning to growth from the 1.2% drop in May; the manufacturing sector’s output grew by 4.8%, accelerating by 2 percentage point, while the output of the utilities sector grew by 4.9%, picking up by 0.1 percentage point, showed the data.

The mining sector’s output grew by 1.7% year over year in the first half, the manufacturing sector’s output grew by 4.2% and the output of the utilities sector grew by 4.1%, showed the data.

Among the 41 industries, 26 industries saw output grow year over year in the first half, showed the data.

In June alone, output of the coal mining and washing industry returned to growth and expanded by 2% from a year earlier; ferrous metal smelting industry grew by7.8%, picking up by 4.7 percentage points; non-ferrous metal smelting industry grew 9.1%, accelerating by 2 percentage points, showed the data.

Notably, output of the automobile manufacturing industry grew by 8.8% in June from a year earlier, slowing by 15 percentage points from the previous month.

Among the major industrial products, electricity generation grew by 2.8% on year in June, slowing by 2.8 percentage points from the previous month; output of pig iron, crude steel and steel products returned to growth; output of automobiles grew by 0.8%, slowing sharply by 16.5 percentage points; output of solar cells surged by 62.6%, expanding by 9.5 percentage points.
