China’s state planner to crack down on coal speculation as prices surge, stepped-up safety inspection adds pressure on coal production

China’s state planner and market regulator have jointly launched an investigation into coal prices and pledged to crack down on market speculation and hoarding. Analysts say that stepped-up safety inspection following a series of fatal accidents are adding pressure on coal production.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the State Administration of Market Regulation have sent a team of inspectors to visit major coal hubs in northern China to investigate inventories and illicit hoarding. 

Physical prices for thermal coal in the 5,500 kilocalorie/kg grade have been hovering around 900 . . .
