The city of Sanya, a top tropical holiday destination on China’s southern Hainan province, is closing its duty free shopping malls on Friday in a bid to contain the worsening COVID-19 outbreak.

Sanya International Duty Free City in Haitang Bay, run by China Duty Free Group and Hainan’s largest offshore mall, will be closed for an undetermined period to curb COVID-19 spreading, it said on its Weibo account on Friday.

Health officials in Hainan said at a news briefing on the day that the regions recorded a total of 191 local Covid cases in the period of August 1 to 5 in the latest outbreak.

Entertainment venues, including bars and cinemas and some tourist sites, have also been told to close to help stem the spread of the virus, although hotels remain open.
