China’s shipments of wearable devices reached 28.57 million units in the second quarter of the year, sliding 23.3% from a year earlier, according to data from market intelligence firm IDC.

In breakdown, shipments of ear-worn devices declined by 23.2% to 16.18 million units; true wireless earphone shipments fell 22.1% to 12.73 million units; watch shipments fell 12.3% to 8.46 million units, including 4.23 million units of watches for adults, down 14.5%, and 4.24 million units of watches for children watch, down 10%, according to the data.

The “618 Shopping Festival, to some extend, boosted consumer demand, and meanwhile new product launches also led to positive growth in some companies, however, the overall market environment and the effect of product upgrading is easing, the report said.

A report released by IDC earlier this week showed that global wearables shipments saw a 6.9% year-on-year decline to 107.4 million units in the second quarter of 2022.

Apple’s market share fell from the previous quarter’s 31% to 25% in the second quarter but the firm was still on the top spot, while Chinese brands Xiaomi and Huawei ranked third and fourth behind Samsung, with all of the top five brands seeing year-on-year declines in shipments during the period, according to IDC.

The report attributed the weak performance to “rising inflation, fears surrounding recession, increased spending on other non-tech categories, and the hyper growth that the wearables market has experienced in the last two years.”
