The number of newborn babies in China registered with the police fell by nearly 15 per cent during the coronavirus-hit 2020, indicating further declines in birthrate and worsening demographic pressures in the rapidly aging country.

A total of 10.04 million babies registered with the government in 2020, 14.8 per cent lower than in 2019, according to data released by the Ministry of Public Security.
