Pelosi arrived in Taiwan; China announced military exercises near Taiwan

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late on Tuesday. Pelosi and her delegation disembarked at Songshan Airport late on Tuesday and were greeted by Taiwan’s foreign minister, Joseph Wu, and Sandra Oudkirk, the top US representative in Taiwan.

In response, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Pelosi’s visit seriously violated China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The visit severely impacts political foundation of Sino-US relations and seriously damages peace, stability in Taiwan Strait, said the ministry. “Those who play with fire will perish by it.”

“China urges the US to stop interfering with China’s internal affairs and not to continue in the wrong and dangerous path, it said.

China will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard sovereignty, territorial integrity in response to Pelosi’s visit, it added. “All consequences are to be borne by US side, Taiwan pro-independence forces.”

Chinese military will hold exercises near Taiwan on August 4 – 7, reported the official Xinhua News Agency after Pelosi arrived in Taiwan.
