Smartphone sales in mainland China reached about 22.1 million units in July, a drop of 4.8% from the prior month and sliding 17.7% from a year ago, according to CINNO Research, marking the worst performance for July since 2015.

The top five smartphone brands by sales in July were OPPO, Honor, Vivo, Xiaomi and Apple, with Apple being the only one seeing positive year-on-year growth supported by strong performance of iPhone 13 series, while all other four brands recording declines from a year ago, showed the data.

Vivo and Oppo led the losses, with July sales sliding 34.7% and 33.3%, respectively, from a year earlier, while Honor and Xiaomi’s July sales declined 12.1% and 17.5%.

While the shortage of upstream component supply has been eased and domestic smartphone makers have adjusted inventories to reasonable levels, given the persistent weakness in market demand, major domestic brands are facing challenges due to a lack of breakthroughs in chips, designs and functions, according to the report.

Apple’s iPhone 14 series are expected to continue a strong momentum, making it the only bright spot in the sluggish smartphone market, it said.
