Taiyuan city to cut steel, cement production in summer season to reduce air pollution

Taiyuan city, capital of North China’s Shanxin province, a major coal production hub, will conduct an intensive campaign to cut air pollution in the summer season, starting from August 1, with measures including reducing output of steel, coke and cement and requiring industrial companies to conduct off-peak production mode, according to a notice released by the provincial authority of ecology and environment on Wednesday.

The city will cut steel output, with output of Taigang Group’s sintering materials and crude steel cut by 10% and output of Shanxi Meijin Iron and Steel’s sintering materials and crude steel cut by 30%; and meanwhile reduce coking capacity, with capacity at Taigang cut by 10%, Shanxi Gengyang, Shanxi Meijin, Shanxi Yaxin Coking cut by 20%, according to the notice.

In addition, Taiyuan-based cement producers are told to suspend production for 60 days to cut cement output and the city’s 248 industrial companies in 13 industries will adopt off-peak production between 8 am – 7 pm each day, and companies in the coking, chemical carbon black and tyre rubber are not allowed to implement equipment maintenance during the period, according o the notice.
