Tesla Giga Shanghai saw its one millionth vehicle roll off the production line on August 13, less than three years after the plant began production, according to Tesla’s official Weibo post on Monday.

Elon Musk, CEO of the US electric vehicle giant, shared the milestone on Twitter, saying, ” Congrats Giga Shanghai on making millionth car! Total Teslas made now over 3 million.

The Tesla Shanghai plant project is the first wholly foreign-owned car manufacturing project in China and Tesla’s first Gigafactory outside the US. It currently produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV. Giga Shanghai began construction on January, 2019, and delivered its first Model 3s in December 2019. Its annual production capacity reached 250,000 units by the end of 2020 and increased to more than 450,000 units in 2021.

In 2021, Giga Shanghai delivered 484,130 units of cars, surging 235% from the previous year, representing 51.7% of the carmaker’s global total for the year.

Giga Shanghai’s current annual production capacity exceeds 750,000 units, according to its Q2 earnings report, and that puts ahead of the 650,000 units of the California plant.

Separately, Grace Tao, Tesla’s vice president of external affairs, said on Monday that the team at Tesla’s Shanghai plant is 99.9% Chinese, and the localization of its supply chain has exceeded 95%.
