US electric vehicle maker Tesla has been upgrading the Giga Shanghai since July and the update for the Phase 2 production line which produces the Model Y have been completed on July 16, Chinese news media Auto Time reported, citing multiple sources.

The update for the Phase 1 production line for Model 3 sedan began on July 17 and is expected to finish on August 7, the report said.

Employees on the Phase 2 production line have returned to work, while those on the Phase 1 production line have been on leave since July 17 and are expected to start work normally from August 8, the report said.

When the upgrade is completed, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai Phase 1 production line will likely produce 500-600 units per shift, per the report.

Tesla has resumed three-shift production, and single-day output of Model 3 will reach 1,000-1,200 units, and the Model Y production line has boosted daily production to 2,000 units, and will reach about 2,200 units per day next month, according to the report. As a comparison, the total single-day production at the plant before the upgrade was around 2,500 units, the report noted.

After the upgrade is completed, Tesla Giga Shanghai’s annual production capacity will expand to about 1.1-1.2 million units, it said.
