China has given the green light to the construction of two new nuclear plants after halting approval for more than a year, as the country increases infrastructure investment to boost the virus-hit economy and enhances energy security amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

The State Council, the country's cabinet, approved construction of Hainan Changjiang nuclear power plant phase 2 and Zhejiang San’ao nuclear power plant phase 1, with an expected investment of 70 billion yuan ($10.24 billion).
