China will step up the efforts to improve basic research, and promote basic researches in strategically important fields, frontier-oriented exploratory researches, and market-oriented researches in an organized manner, the Ministry of Education said during a national conference on science and technology innovation in colleges and universities.

The ministry will select strategic topics addressing basic research, build key national laboratories, and set up high-level science centers and basic disciplinary research hubs.

It will upgrade research tools to establish high-level scientific and technological infrastructure. accelerate the construction of high-level biosafety laboratories, observation stations, scientific and technological databases, resource specimen banks and other basic research support capabilities to speed up innovative breakthroughs, it said.
