China saw catering revenue rise 12.4% on year in Aug, railway, air passenger trips both hit new record – commerce ministry

Driven by the strong travel demand in the summer holiday season, China’s catering, hospitality, tourism and transportation consumption grew rapidly in August, said China’s Ministry of Commerce.

China’s catering revenue reached 421.2 billion yuan in August, rising by 12.4% from a year earlier, and railway and air passenger trips reached 830 million and 130 million, respectively, both hitting the highest on record, it said.

Movie box office revenue exceeded 20.6 billion yuan, surging 1.26 times from a year earlier, marking a new record high for the same period, it said.

In the first eight months of the year, China’s service retail sales rose by 19.4% from a year earlier, said the ministry.

Separately, the number of tourists in mainland China during this year’s summer holiday period reached 1.839 billion, generating a tourism revenue of up to 1.21 trillion yuan, according to the data released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

China had about 110,000 performance during the period, surging 301% from a year earlier, and revenue from the performance reached 10.2 billion yuan, soaring 792%, with viewers skyrocketing 806% to 32.56 million, it said.
