China’s hydropower generation has not improved and hydropower output in the first four months of the year fell by 13.7% from a year ago, including a drop of 25.9% in April alone, said the China Electricity Council.

The downward trend continued in May and the year-on-year decline is expected to be faster than that in April, it said.

Due to falling hydropower production capacity, power supply in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces was tight in the first quarter and even now, power supply in Yunnan remains relatively tight, it said.

Meteorological department expects that China’s southwestern and central regions will see lower-than-usual rains, high temperature and drought in some areas, which may affect local power supply, it said.
