China’s newly married couples fell 6% in 2021 to hit lowest since 1986

The number of new marriages in China fell by 6% in 2021 from a year earlier to 7.6 million, the lowest since 1986, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The figure fell below eight million for the first time since 2003.

China’s marriage rate, which measures the number of new marriages per 1,000 residents per year, was 0.54% last year, down by 0.04 percentage point from 2020.

The biggest number of new marriages was among those aged above 30, making up more than 48.2% of the total, increasing from 46.5%. Meanwhile, the second-largest group was those aged from 25 to 29, accounting for 35.3%, and rising by 0.4 percentage point. Those aged between 20 and 24 made up 16.5% of the total, down from 18.6%.

China registered 2.8 million divorces last year, down by almost 35% from the previous year, after the country implemented a “cooling-off period” on Jan. 1, 2021, to allow potential divorcees to regret within 30 days and stay married.
