China’s planned capacity of major lithium battery materials by 2025 is excessive across the board and in particular, the planned capacity of negative electrode materials by 2025 is equivalent to five times of estimated demand that year, reported state-backed media China Energy News, citing estimates by lithium battery research institute GGII.

The overcapacity in the power battery industry has started to emerge, but for most companies, the capacity in construction is not necessarily the actual capacity, with capacity utilization rate of 50% seen as a good level, the report said, citing experts.

The expansion of power battery capacity has exceeded market need and companies in the industry should be alert to the risk of overcapacity, avoid blind expansion and disorderly expansion and promote healthy and high-quality development of the industry, it said, citing industry insiders.
