China’s three largest state-owned carriers will restart direct flights between China and the UK, resuming services after an 18-month suspension due to the Covid pandemic.

Air China will restart direct flights between Beijing and London from Thursday and also resume flights from Shanghai to London from Saturday, the carrier said. China Eastern Airlines said it will restart services from Shanghai to London on Friday, while China Southern Airlines said on Thursday that it will fly from Guangzhou to London starting August 17.

On Wednesday, the British Embassy in Beijing said on its official WeChat account that the Department of Transport of UK has reached consensus with Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to resume two-way direct passenger services between the UK and China.

China and Britain have suspended services for more than one year and a half. In December 2020, two new coronavirus variants were discovered in Britain. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, many countries introduced measures to ban entry or suspend flights to the UK.
