China’s President Xi Jinping and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had “robust conversation” which covered a broad range of issues, Blinken said at a press conference after the meeting with Xi on Monday afternoon.

As the most important countries in the world, both the US and China have the obligation to manage the bilateral relationship responsibly, which is in the interest of the US, China and the world, Blinken said.

Blinken’s conversations with both Xi and Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi were “robust” and covered everything from “Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine” through to America’s fentanyl crisis, he said.

On Taiwan, Blinken reiterated the US’s longstanding One China policy, meaning there is only one Chinese government, but he warned against China’s “provocative actions” in the Taiwan Strait, which he raised with Xi.

The US remains “deeply concerned” about human rights “violations” by China, specifcally in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong, he said.

He admitted the US-China relationship had suffered “instability” – and that it was important to stabilise it, and he assured the people and government of China that the US isn’t “seeking to economically contain them”. China’s “broad economic success” also benefits the US, he said
