Shanghai’s two airports saw passenger traffic surge four times on year in July amid surging travel demand in summer

The two airports in China’s financial hub of Shanghai saw flight volumes and passenger throughput surge in July from a year earlier as the country’s travel demand spikes during the summer holiday season.

The Shanghai Pudong International Airport’s aircraft takeoffs and landings reached 41,279 in July, surging 178.87% from a year earlier, and passenger throughput reached 5.72 million, surging 557.62% year over year, the airport operator said. 

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport’s aircraft takeoffs and landings reached 22,993 in July, surging 142.45 from a year earlier, and passenger traffic reached 3.8 million, surging 254.3% from a year earlier, it said.

In total, the two airports’ passenger traffic reached 9.52 million in July, surging by nearly four times from a year earlier, while aircraft takeoffs and landings reached 64,272 last month, jumping by nearly 165% year over year.

The airport operator said that the two airports are expected to record 65 million passenger traffic in 2023, surging 125% from the 28.89 million in 2022.

According to a note from Everbright Securities, Shanghai Pudong Airport’s aircraft takeoffs and landings during the summer holiday season (July 1 – August 31) are expected to reach 92% of the level seen in the same period in 2019, while passenger traffic expected to reach 88% of 2019 level. For Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, the two figures are expected to reach 109% and 104%, respectively, said the broker.
