China’s coking industry implemented three rounds of price hikes in July, hiking coke prices by a total of 200 yuan per tonne, the China Coking Industry Association said.

The price hikes came as raw material prices continued to rise; some coking companies cut production due to low profit, which tightened suppliers; and coke demand remained strong as coke inventory at steelmakers at low levels, it said.

Prices of coking coal also increased as the authority in major production hubs step up safety inspections and some coal miners in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces suspended production, which tightened coking coal supply in the short term, and meanwhile, downstream coking companies and trading houses stepped up purchases, said the association.
