China’s electricity demand will maintain robust growth in the next three years, with electricity consumption expected to reach 9.8 – 10.2 trillion kWh in 2025, according to a report released by the China Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute.
In 2022, China’s electricity consumption reached 8.6 trillion kWh, rising by 3.6% from a year earlier, with the structure of electricity consumption improving further by shifting towards the tertiary sector and the household sector from the secondary sector, according to the report.
In terms of electricity generation, by the end of 2022, China’s total installed power generation capacity stood at 2.56 billion kW, rising by 7.8% from a year earlier, and the total power generation last year reached 8.7 trillion kWh, rising by 3.6%, showed the data.
In 2024 – 2025, China may face great pressure in ensuring power supply and extreme weather will significantly push higher power load, and considering the current progress of existing power generation and power grid projects, 14 regions in China will see tight power supply by then, the report said.
