China’s electricity generation grew at slower pace in May, coal-fired power, solar power picked up

China’s electricity generation reached 688.6 billion kWh in May, rising by 5.6% from a year earlier, slowing from the 6.1% growth in April, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

In breakdown, coal-fired power and nuclear power generation grew at a faster pace, wind power growth slowed, hydro power declined at faster rate, while solar power returned to growth, showed the data. 

Coal-fired power generation grew by 15.9% in May from a year earlier, accelerating by 4.4 percentage points from April; nuclear power generation grew by 6.3%, accelerating by 0.6 percentage points; hydro power generation tumbled by 32.9%, expanding by 7 percentage points; wind power grew by 15.3%, slowing by 5.6 percentage points; while solar power grew by 0.1%, compared to 3.3% drop in April, showed the data.
