Southwestern China’s Sichuan province is facing a power supply gap of about 7.5 million kW this summer when the provincial capital city Chengdu will hold the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, estimated the Sichuan office of the National Energy Administration.

Sichuan’s coal-fired power generating unit has been in high-load operations, unplanned suspension and disruptions occur frequently and Sichuan will face severe situation in ensuring stable power supply this summer, it said.

Sichuan is a major hydro power generation province in China, with installed hydropower capacity in the province accounting for nearly 80% of its total installed capacity. However, about half of them are run-of-river hydropower with high reliance on incoming water.
