China’s peak power load this year will reach about 1.37 billion kW under normal weather conditions, an increase of about 80 million kW from last year, and if there is a long period of extreme weather, the maximum load may increase by about 100 million kilowatts compared to last year, said the China Electricity Council (CEC), the country’s largest electricity industry body.

According to data from the Southern Power Grid which serves five provinces in southern China, industrial electricity consumption in the five provinces grew by 2.7% year over year in May and in particular, electricity consumption in new energy-related industries maintained a fast growth, while recovering offline consumption lead to a strong growth of electricity use in the tertiary industry.

Overall speaking, China electricity supply and demand balance to be tight this year, with some regions to see tight supply during peak periods, and in particular, South, East and Central regions will see gaps in power supply, while Northeast, North, and Northwest regions will a relatively balanced power situation, said the CEC.
