Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, South Africa’s minister responsible for electricity, will meet with six major Chinese solar equipment manufacturers during a trip to China this week in hope that the China will guarantee the supply of solar panels, according to state media Global Times.

Eskom Holdings, the South African state-owned company that supplies more than 90% of the country’s electricity, has failed to meet demand, leading to an increasing shift to solar power for businesses and households.

Ramokgopa said that there are only two solar panel manufacturers in South Africa and all the output has been used for major projects by mining companies, resulting in other projects relying on imports from China, and he hoped to shorten the time it takes to import solar panels from China.
